The 3rd Annual Action Maverick Benefit will honor Dr. Hugh Herr, an MIT professor, researcher and inventor. A rock-climbing prodigy, Herr suffered severe frostbite in an accident on Mt. Washington when he was 17. Both of his legs had to be amputated below the knee. Overcoming this tragedy was the motivation for his breakthrough advances in prosthetics and orthotics, giving greater mobility and new hope to those with physical disabilities. Dr. Herr is doing revolutionary work in the emerging field of biomechatronics – technology that marries robotics and human biomechanics. Today he directs the Biomechatronics Group within MIT’s Media Lab focusing on human amplification and rehabilitation systems – technologies that interact with human limbs that amplify function. In 2007, Dr. Hugh Herr received the Heinz Award in Technology, the Economy and Employment for his pioneering work in new prosthetics that merge body and machine.
